Kombucha Heating Mats Suck…Until Now

an old technology seedling mat from hydrafarm is a poor choice for brewing kombucha

The time has come for Something Better!!!

Okay, maybe that’s a blunt title, but it’s completely true. I’ve been brewing Kombucha for over 7 years and teaching people about the benefits of Kombucha for almost as long. Still, in all that time, the technology used to heat Komucha through the Fall, Winter and Spring months has remained ancient and terribly inefficient. Still, one of the most common questions I receive is: How can I keep my Kombucha brew warm? Up until now, I could only provide unsatisfying answers. “A seedling mat?” “An old sweater?” Not particularly comforting to the new kombucha brewer.

Have you tried using a seedling mat to heat your Kombucha? I guess something is better than nothing but sometimes, on cold evenings, I couldn’t even tell if the mat was on. They say those mats raise the temperature by 3-4 degrees. Like that’s supposed to help people in Minnesota in January? 4 degrees won’t even help me here in Southern California on most Winter evenings! Just not nearly enough power to accomplish any significant heat.

Plus the mats are thick and clunky and heated with wires, meaning they are unsafe for glass. Hey, I’m sure if you’re growing seeldings, they’re great! And if you’ve made them work for you in the past, good for you. I used to own 4 of them and would sometimes stack them together to create more heat. But that never really worked and it looked terrible. Now I find out as much as 40-50% of the energy from the seedling mats is LOST COMPLETELY.

Ridiculously inefficient. I can’t continue to support using such a flawed solution. That’s not good enough. Not in today’s world when we are using up our resources at a higher rate than ever before. Kombucha is about sustainability, so I had to find a better answer.

The Kombucha Mamma Year Round Heating System - The most powerful homebrew heating system for Kombucha brewers.

The Year Round Heating System by Kombucha Mamma

After much research and testing, I can finally make available the perfect Kombucha heating sytems. They are incredibly efficient, quickly transforming 99% of the electricity into heat. They are lightweight, durable and flexible, which means you can bend it around your vessel (or multiple vessels) while providing even heat ditribution. They are powerful enough to raise the temp by 10-20 degrees. They are made in the USA and UL Listed.

Check them out in action in my new video below! The Essential Heating Strip is intended for moderate climates/homes that need a boost to sustain the brew. The Year Round Heating System is intended for cooler climates/homes that need a flexible heating system with a dimmer. The Year Round system is also excellent for heating multiple brewing jars and creating your own heated area for kombucha brewing even in moderate temperatures.

I am so excited. Can you tell? :)

  1. Looks awesome! And more affordable than the mat I use – which only seems to heat the bottom of the brew.

Would the heating pad I use for making yogurt work just the same?

  3. Hi Heather,

Yes, that’s another problem with the seedling mats. Stacking your jars on a flat mat can cause YEAST OVERGROWTH because you are heating just the bottom. These create a heated area around the sides for much more even distribution. :)

  4. Hi Courtney,

Hard to say without seeing it. If it’s a traditional “heat from the bottom” type mat, it may be problematic in terms of yeast growth.

Thank you. It looks similar to the mat in your post except covered in fabric.

WOW!! I was thinking about ordering the “other” type of heating mat, but now I’m going to wait- save a few bucks- and possibly order 2 as I want to add another brewer to my system. Happy Dance here for sure!

    • Hi Laila,

I have 3 continuous brewers going plus all of my batch brews – yeah, its true, I’m Kombucha Krazy!! And I love it =)

I have been brewing with White tea for a few months and love my brew. But now I’d like to try some different tea combos. I wonder if I could buy your tea mix online.
Please let me know if you sell it by itself and what it caosts.

    thanks,
    Lynn

Continuous Brew mini-FAQ

By changing the starting ratio from…
1 Part KT:9 Parts Starter (orignial method)
to
3 Parts KT:1 PART Starter Liquid (CB method)
…the brewing cycle is dramatically reduced (just 1-2 days to complete).

Actually, CB results in less work.  One example: a more streamlined bottling experience, without the need to lift your brewing vessel, clean it every week or deal with the mess afterwards.

Sure, just drain mature KT and add starter liquid to taste.  Or for bottles, flavor as desired – no funnel, no mess!

Not at all.  Having it on tap will change your perspective.  Plus, you’ll find friends, family and neighbors eyeing your Kombucha set-up with envy and maybe even helping themselves to a fresh glass.

Don’t be nervous.  You have the experience of hundreds of homebrewers backing you up in the form of my detailed instructions and maintenance plan.  You will be guided along the way.  You will save time and effort.
