Organic Chia Seeds for Flavoring
Chia seeds come from the small flowering annual, Salvia hispanica, indigenous to southwestern Mexico and northwestern Central America. It’s use as a food dates back to 3500 BC in the pre-Columbian era where the seeds were used as tribute to Aztec rulers and the gods during ceremonies.
Making good use of marshy land, the Aztecs wove bark from trees into large mats and anchored these in lakes. These mats, when covered with soil and were used to grow chia and other grains. These floating gardens were called chinampas.
Chia seeds are a good source of fiber, calcium, omega-3, contain more antioxidants than blueberries and are a complete protein. Dieters love them as they asorb up to 10-times their weight in water, and help to curb appetite.
In food prep, they are a natural thickening agent, and having no flavor of their own, enhance whatever they are used in. Some commercial brands sell chia seed Kombuchas and other chia drinks. The thick texture is satisfying and is kind of like the tapioca pearls in boba tea.
How to Use
- Hydrate 1 tsp of the seeds in 1/4 of liquid (water, Kombucha, juice) for 20 minutes or until it thickens
- If using juice or Kombucha, some of the sugar will also be absorbed, so you may want to add more sweetener to balance the flavor.
- Pour the thickened chia seeds into your favorite Kombucha, store in the fridge and consume within 48 hours for the freshest flavor.
*Note – the chia seeds may not remain suspended in the bottle as they do in commercial brands.
