Who is The Kombucha Mamma?

Hello Kombucha Aficionados!

Welcome to Kombucha Kamp — your home for Kombucha brewing tips, education, recipes, and fermentation know-how.

Kombucha Kamp’s mission is simple and enduring:

to change the world, one gut at a time by educating and empowering people to ferment food and drink safely at home, just as humans have done throughout history.

Research continues to show that life is, at its core, bacteria-powered. Humans are no exception. At KKamp, we call ourselves bacteriosapiens in honor of this special connection. Fermentation is one of the most practical, accessible – and dare we say magical? ways to reconnect with that reality.

I’m Hannah Crum—affectionately known as The Kombucha Mamma—and I’ve been brewing Kombucha and teaching others how to do it since 2004.

What began as a love of a lip-puckering, fizzy brew has grown into a lifelong passion, a profession, and an educational platform serving fermenters around the world.

Who Is Hannah Ruhamah Crum?

Hannah Crum is a fermentation educator, author, and long-time advocate for Kombucha literacy and safe home brewing. She is the founder of Kombucha Kamp, one of the earliest and most comprehensive Kombucha education resources available online.

From homebrew hobbyist to educator to master brewer, Kombucha Kamp has grown organically alongside Hannah’s experience—always with a commitment to providing accurate, up-to-date, and practical information for brewers at every stage.

Teaching, Brewing, and Building the Kombucha Community

For over a decade, Hannah taught Kombucha brewing classes to groups of all sizes—from one-on-one instruction to workshops of 100+ people—across the United States.

Her educational work has reached audiences through:

  • festivals and health conferences
  • podcasts, interviews, and articles
  • video tutorials with hundreds of thousands of views

Kombucha Kamp was featured on “What’s Brewing?” hosted by Jody Rudman on the Veria Network, helping bring fermentation education to an even wider audience.

From Home Brewing to Commercial Fermentation

In addition to teaching, Hannah has:

  • installed large-scale Kombucha brewing systems
  • served as master brewer for restaurants and shops in the Los Angeles area
  • consulted for Kombucha brands ranging from first-time startups to established breweries scaling production
  • supplied wholesale cultures and brewing equipment to the industry

This work is grounded in a belief that education strengthens the entire fermentation ecosystem, rather than competing with it.

Writing, Advocacy, and Industry Leadership

Hannah and her husband/business partner, Alex LaGory (aka Alex Kombucha), have written extensively about the Kombucha industry for publications including BevNet and Beverage Spectrum Magazine, among others.

Their shared desire to support the growth and integrity of the Kombucha industry led them to co-found Kombucha Brewers International (KBI) in 2014—a non-profit trade association dedicated to promoting and protecting commercial Kombucha worldwide.

Alex LaGory: The Other Half of Kombucha Kamp

Alex LaGory brings a storyteller’s eye to Kombucha Kamp. With a background in film, television, journalism, and documentary production, Alex has created projects featuring Broadway actors, NBA stars, and national political events.

After years of watching Hannah teach Kombucha brewing, Alex’s own fermentation journey led to a profound personal shift—losing 40 pounds in 18 months after changing his diet and embracing fermented foods.

Since 2010, Alex has served as:

  • President of Kombucha Kamp
  • Co-author of the Kombucha Kamp website
  • Co-author of The Big Book of Kombucha
  • Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board of Kombucha Brewers International

All because he started trusting his gut.

How I Discovered Kombucha (Or How It Found Me)

I first encountered Kombucha while visiting a friend in San Francisco. His girlfriend showed me her mysterious jars, and I was instantly intrigued.

Back in Los Angeles, I searched for Kombucha at Whole Foods and picked up a bottle of GT’s Synergy Gingerade. The bubbles, the ginger, the balance of sweet and tart—it was love at first sip.

But it was also expensive.

So I did what any curious person would do: I found some jars.

I scoured libraries and the early internet, tracked down my first culture, and began brewing at home. Soon, I was passing SCOBYs to friends and teaching them how to brew.

I’ve always been a teacher at heart. Kombucha wasn’t just delicious—it resonated deeply with me.

The idea for Kombucha Kamp crystallized during an Artist’s Way workshop, where I realized I wanted to teach Kombucha not just locally, but globally.

You are now enjoying the fruits of that realization.
