Jars – Quart or smaller for milk kefir, a gallon or larger size for Kombucha or JUN, and any of the above for water kefir. Make sure your kefir jars have a lid for best results.
Strainer/Cheesecloth – to recapture kefir grains, it is best to pour it through a strainer and gently stir with a spatula until only the grains remain. Or for filtering out flavorings or yeast as desired from all ferments.
Cloth Cover w/ Rubber Band– for Kombucha & JUN, which like airflow.
Kettle & Tea Strainer– hot water and a nice tea blend begin Kombucha or JUN.
Zester & Grater– hand-held tool useful for creating fine shavings of citrus rind or ginger for additional flavor.
Pitcher or Bowl– used to capture the Kombucha, kefir, whey. A nice large opening will make it easier to harvest.
Funnel– helpful at bottling time.
Kraut Pounder – these are handy for extracting as much liquid as possible from your cabbage or other veggies for kraut. The larger end is for pounding and the smaller end may be used to tamp down plant material so its fully submerged in the jar.
Kraut Weights– there are many innovative ways to create weights to keep plant matter submerged including a smaller jar filled with beans, rice or pebbles; clean flat rock from the garden; or custom porcelain weights.
