Cocktail Recipe: Blueberry Kombucha Margarita aka “The Blue-Bucha-Rita”

Blueberry Kombucha Margarita

A Bright, Tart Kombucha Cocktail With Fresh Blueberries, Lime & Tequila

Sweet blueberries. Fresh lime. Crisp tequila. Tangy Kombucha. 🍋🫐

The Blueberry Kombucha Margarita is a lighter, brighter twist on the classic margarita that layers the complexity of fermented tea over the familiar sweet-sour balance of a traditional cocktail.

The natural acidity and gentle carbonation of Kombucha pair beautifully with tequila while fresh blueberries add color, depth, and subtle berry sweetness.

Unlike overly sugary margarita mixes, Kombucha brings organic acids, nuanced flavor, and a pleasantly dry finish that keeps this drink refreshing instead of syrupy. The result is a cocktail that feels elevated enough for a dinner party but simple enough for a backyard summer gathering.

And yes, it also makes an excellent mocktail. Just leave out the Tequila or substitute your favorite Zero-Proof tequila. (We really like Ritual Zero-Proof Tequila.)

Why Kombucha Works In Margaritas

Kombucha naturally complements citrus-forward cocktails because fermentation creates many of the same tart, complex flavor notes traditionally added through sour mixes, shrubs, or fresh citrus juices.

In a Kombucha Margarita, the booch acts as:

  • A natural sour element
  • A lightly sparkling mixer
  • A flavor enhancer for fruit and botanicals
  • A lower-sugar alternative to commercial margarita mixes

Berry-forward Kombuchas work especially well here, though ginger, citrus, floral, or even Jun Tea variations can create incredible riffs on the original recipe.

What This Margarita Tastes Like

The Blueberry Kombucha Margarita is:

  • Tart but balanced
  • Bright and citrusy
  • Slightly earthy from the blueberries
  • Smooth with a lightly effervescent finish
  • Less sugary than a traditional margarita

The Kombucha adds depth rather than overwhelming the cocktail. Think “craft cocktail energy” rather than sugary frozen margarita machine chaos.

Just had a Ginger Kombucha Shandy (or three)

In a tall glass, combine in equal parts:

    Shiner Red Rubybird
    Ginger Kombucha

We found a crisp slice of braeburn apple was a nice garnish.
The Red Rubybird is great because the grapefruit and ginger really makes it stand out as a summer beer.
    Enjoy!

This sounds amazing. However won’t the alcohol kill or at least harm the live cultures?

    Kombucha cocktail recipe….

    1.5 oz vodka
2.5 oz orange blossom oolong kombucha
    1 mandarin orange
    Juice of half a lemon
.75 oz of basil simple syrup
    half an egg white

In a martini shaker muddle mandarin and syrup until pulp.
place rest of ingredients into a pint glass, slowly pour and stir into the martini shaker mixing everything with a spoon as you go.
Then vigourously shake everything! When you see the foam of the egg white forming, shake it again!!
Pour everything into a small rocks glass, no rocks!
Garnish with lemon and mandarin zest
    Sip and enjoy!
This kombucha flavour acts as a minor bittering agent (bitters in cocktails are for the best)
the syrup cuts the tartness of the citrus, the basil neutralizes and helps to smooth the finish off on the palate. The egg white gives it a smooth and creamy texture and thus makes a delicious cocktail!!
    Enjoy

This is not a “recipe,” but I just poured a bit of gin into my ginger/black pepper ‘buch and it is better than any gin and tonic I’ve ever had. 🙂 Happy Friday Mamma!
